Safety Tips

Your safety is our priority. Follow these guidelines to protect yourself when using Placematch to find properties or connect with others.

Stay Safe on Placematch

Placematch is committed to providing a safe platform for connecting people with properties. However, your safety ultimately depends on your own actions and decisions. Please read and follow these safety guidelines to protect yourself when using our platform.

Before Meeting Someone

  1. Verify the listing or profile: Review the property listing or user profile carefully. Look for complete information, multiple photos, and consistent details.
  2. Communicate through the platform first: Use Placematch's messaging system initially to get to know the other party before sharing contact information.
  3. Ask questions: Request additional information about the property, rental terms, or the person you're meeting. Legitimate users will be happy to provide details.
  4. Research the area: Familiarize yourself with the neighborhood where the property is located. Check if it's safe and meets your expectations.
  5. Trust your instincts: If something feels off or doesn't seem right, trust your gut and don't proceed with the meeting.
  6. Verify identity when possible: Ask for a LinkedIn profile, business card, or other verification if you're uncertain about someone's identity.

When Meeting in Person

  1. Meet in public first: For initial meetings, consider meeting in a public place like a coffee shop before going to the property.
  2. Bring someone with you: Always bring a friend or family member when viewing a property, especially if you're meeting someone for the first time.
  3. Share your plans: Tell a trusted friend or family member where you're going, who you're meeting, and when you expect to return. Share the property address and contact information.
  4. Meet during daylight hours: Schedule property viewings during daylight hours when possible.
  5. Keep your phone charged: Ensure your phone is fully charged and has sufficient credit/data before the meeting.
  6. Use your own transportation: Drive yourself or use your own transportation to maintain independence and the ability to leave when needed.
  7. Stay alert: Be aware of your surroundings and watch for any red flags or suspicious behavior.
  8. Don't share personal documents: Never share your ID, passport, or other personal documents during initial meetings.

Protecting Your Personal Information

  1. Control your privacy settings: Use Placematch's privacy settings to control who can see your profile and contact information.
  2. Only share contact info when ready: Don't share your email address or phone number until you're comfortable with the other party and have verified their identity.
  3. Be cautious with social media: Avoid sharing your social media profiles with people you haven't met yet.
  4. Use a dedicated email: Consider using a separate email address for property searches to protect your primary email.
  5. Don't share financial information: Never share bank account details, credit card numbers, or other financial information through Placematch or with people you haven't verified.
  6. Review your profile regularly: Periodically check what information is visible on your profile and update privacy settings as needed.

Red Flags and Scam Prevention

Watch out for these warning signs that may indicate a scam:

  • Too good to be true: Properties priced significantly below market value are often scams.
  • Pressure tactics: Scammers often pressure you to act quickly or make immediate payments.
  • Requests for upfront payments: Be wary of requests for deposits, fees, or payments before viewing a property or signing any agreements.
  • Inability to meet in person: If someone refuses to meet in person or makes excuses, it's likely a scam.
  • Poor communication: Vague responses, broken English (if it seems inconsistent with their profile), or refusal to answer questions can be red flags.
  • Unusual payment methods: Requests for payment via wire transfer, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or other untraceable methods are almost always scams.
  • Missing or stolen photos: If property photos look stolen from other listings or are of poor quality, be suspicious.
  • No property address: Refusal to provide a specific address or vague location descriptions are warning signs.
  • Identity verification issues: If someone can't verify their identity or ownership of the property, proceed with extreme caution.

Financial Safety

  1. Never pay before viewing: Never send money, deposits, or fees before viewing a property in person and verifying its legitimacy.
  2. Use secure payment methods: If you do need to make payments, use secure, traceable methods. Avoid cash payments for deposits or rent.
  3. Get everything in writing: Always get rental agreements, lease terms, and payment receipts in writing.
  4. Verify property ownership: Before making any payments, verify that the person you're dealing with actually owns or has the authority to rent the property.
  5. Read contracts carefully: Read all contracts and agreements thoroughly before signing. Don't sign anything you don't understand.
  6. Keep records: Keep copies of all communications, payments, and documents related to your property search or rental.
  7. Consult professionals: For large transactions, consider consulting with a lawyer or real estate professional.

Team-Up Group Safety

If you're using our Team-Up feature to find roommates or shared accommodation:

  1. Meet all potential roommates: Before committing to a team-up group, meet all members in person to ensure compatibility.
  2. Verify group details: Confirm the property details, budget, and move-in date with the group leader and other members.
  3. Set clear expectations: Discuss house rules, rent sharing, and responsibilities before moving in together.
  4. Get agreements in writing: Document how expenses will be shared and any agreements about living arrangements.
  5. Trust your instincts: If you don't feel comfortable with the group members, don't join the team-up.
  6. Background checks: Consider conducting background checks or asking for references from potential roommates if you have concerns.

Reporting Safety Issues

If you encounter suspicious behavior, scams, or safety concerns:

  1. Report to Placematch: Use our reporting feature to report suspicious users, fraudulent listings, or safety concerns.
  2. Contact local authorities: If you feel you're in immediate danger or have been scammed, contact your local police department.
  3. Document everything: Keep screenshots, messages, and other evidence of suspicious activity.
  4. Warn others: If you've encountered a scam, consider warning others through reviews or community forums (without sharing personal information).
  5. Contact support: Reach out to our support team at support@placematch.app for assistance with safety concerns.

Remember

Your safety is your responsibility. If something feels wrong, trust your instincts and don't proceed. It's better to miss out on a property than to put yourself in an unsafe situation. Placematch is here to help connect you with properties, but always prioritize your personal safety.
